mohawk-inn-and-conference-centre-logo
Last month we announced the dates for the 2019 OntarioACHI annual conference and exhibitors showcase as February 19th to 21st, 2019.
Following feedback from this year, next year we are changing things up yet again. The conference will be over 3-days, with the first day reserved solely for training and the next two for seminars, presentations and exhibitors showcase.
The first day will have two streams, one for new inspectors and those wishing to get into the profession. The second stream will be for established inspectors wishing to expand their income potential.
We are actively seeking assistance from Members who wish to be part of the Conference Committee. Work on the committee is worth 12 hours of Professional Development Credits (CPD) to apply to your CCHI commitment. Contact the secretary @ ontarioachi.ca for more information.

Ancillary Inspection Training

We will be running a full day course for inspectors who wish to increase their service offerings. The courses will be for Indoor Air Quality and for Radon Measurement. The Courses are planned to be held in the GTA in October and November. Successful candidates who attend the course and pass the associate examination will be entitled to use the OntarioACHI Certified Radon Measurement Inspector (OCRMI) or the OntarioACHI Certified Indoor Air Quality Assessor (OCIAQA) designations.
These will be full-day courses costing $325 plus tax. Spaces are limited so early booking is recommended.
Each course will be worth 7 CPEs towards the CCHI as well.
Discounts will be applied to any inspector who attended the half-day version of these courses at the 2018 Conference and did not obtain certification.

A Residential Home Inspection is a snapshot in time, visual, non-invasive inspection of a property.   The Home Inspector does not have a crystal ball to allow them to see into the future.  The Home Inspector does not have a time machine to go back in time to see what may have happened in the past.  The Home Inspector certainly does not …

Drone Infographic

Even with all of the information provided a number of calls are still coming in from inspectors who don't understand the regulations. Because of our activity in the stakeholder space for Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems with Transport-Canada we have also had calls from Realtors wishing to utilise drones for feature sheets and online listings of properties. We have designed an infographic which breaks down the current regulations. This will be updated when the new regulations are published in the Canada-Gazette II later this year. Read more here

August update on Licensing

Our last face-to-face meeting was with the Condominium Management Regulatory Authority of Ontario on May 23rd, 2018.  Since then we have heard nothing with respect to the developing of the framework for the DAA that will administer the Licensing of Home Inspectors in Ontario according to the Home Inspection Act, 2017 and associated regulations. At our meeting in May, we were told …

TARION Inspections
Last month we told you of the work we are doing with the TARION Warranty Corporation to produce some specific training for TARION PDI, 30-day, 1-year, 2-year and 7-year warranty inspections. We are pleased to announce we have had the first draft of the documents from TARION. There appears to be a lot of work ahead of us to get these documents to a position where an accredited course can be developed, but we are hoping that we can have this completed before the end of this year.
The idea is that our members who perform this course and take the examination will be certified as qualified to properly perform these types of inspections, which are distinctly different from a standard Home Inspection. More soon.

A number of Inspectors have raised a concern about wires crossing the bus in an electrical panel. Inspectors are being questioned by Realtors as to the codes that apply to these concerns. We frequently find our members in a situation where a safety concern of the inspector is not specifically covered with a code.
We are aware of the concern and have reached out to a number of electricians, the majority of which have replied that regardless of whether the wire is hot, grounded or ground they should not cross the bus bar, but instead be routed in the cable trays around the breakers.
As we have a minority of electricians take an opposing view, we asked for an official position from the Electrical Safety Authority. As usual, they came through with flying colours. More here

Some of you may or not be aware that Len Inkster, one of the founders, long-time secretary and co-registrar for your association has had a serious accident.  Len damaged his left leg and ankle after falling down some stairs. At first, the damage appeared solely to be a spiral fracture of the Fibula, which in itself was quite serious as the …
